Seeing Spirits

Seeing Spirits was inspired by all the hours I walked around the Old City of Knoxville, TN when I lived in a loft that had been created out of the second floor warehouse of a Kosher Deli from the 1920's. The part of the Old City where I lived actually was built over the first floor and the basements of an older Old City. The Original Streets disappeared underneath a bridge overpass that was over the railroad tracks. I discovered that there was a warren of perfectly preserved storefronts and basements underneath my building. A labyrinthe of tunnels and ornately built rooms and building facades. Exploring this secret city was both thrilling, daunting and numinous because Spirits of the original settlers, Native Americans and River Merchants and traders congregated there just 20 feet below me. They were not unfriendly, but often they seemed a little bit confuqed. They were not always aware that they were not alive or corporeal. And yet I felt safe knowing they were always there protecting me, we whom they fondly referred to as the surface dwellers.
