Soothing Scenery
SOOTHING SCENERY ACRYLIC PAINT, INTERFERENCE --REFLECTIVE CHROMA PAINTS, PASTELS, GEL MEDIA, IRIDESCENT SEWING RIBBONS OF SEVERAL VARIETIES, OIL AND ACRYLIC PAINT PENS, GLITTER, SEQUINS, GESSO, SMALL ROUND PLASTIC SEALS FROM VITAMIN CONTAINERS Soothing Scenery was inspired by a series of dreams I had in which I found myself gazing at mesmerizingly beautiful serene vistas. These landscapes were both immersive and inspiring. I felt as though the very air sparkled with possibility and this made my soul soar even while I knew I was sleeping. There have also been places and time in my life where I have had the luck and good fortune to experience truly entrancing magical scenery in 'real life.' When I was a child we spent our summers in Southold, NY, a hamlet way out near the tip of the North Fork of Long Island. The cabin was on Hashamamuck Pond, a body of water that stretched a mile and a half, the entire width of Long Island at that point. The views of the water changed with every hour of the day. The nature preserve across the pond would be filled with mist at dawn, the only sounds coming from the swans and ospreys hiding in the reeds. To the left the pond received its water and tidal flows from the Great Peconic Bay. To the right, less than a mile away was Long Island Sound, a more ocean like body of water with four foot waves and nothing between us and Connecticut-- or Europe, depending on which side of the breakfast table you were sitting on. Soothing Scenery may be a visual prompt in the surroundings that you remember from the age of 5 --as I did. It can be the vision that calms your mind when you begin to panic. While it was and is a real place, it is much more than a location. Utimately its power and depth lies in my soul, in the womb of generosity and kindness I was fortunate to experience daily with my siblings, parents, little cousin, aunt and uncle that stayed with us all summer long for so many cherished years. When I set about painting this work, my father Max had already passed on 26 years earlier, and my mother had just recently slipped away at 95 years old, in 2024. I certainly have sad feelings and thoughts sometimes. But remembering how my life was enveloped in gentlessness and unconditional love is the real Soothing Scenery.
