Grinton Moore, South Yorkshire
This piece was inspired by looking out over Grinton Moore at Dawn. There is something so quiet and humble, yet exalted and magnificent about these lowland fields of heather and lovely tiny little flowers that can grow in that terrible salty soil. Late summer in England the sky is still a perfect shade of longing. The fields are no longer purple per se, with Heather blooms, but are starting to get ready for the fall descent to scrub. Though the heat is well past its peak there are other tiny meadow blooms scattered everywhere of every possible kind, yellow, orange, red, and just a teeny hint of the coming brown of winter. Travel is both renewing and rejuvinating. Scientists have proven that gazing at beautiful landscapes actually lowers your heartrate, calms the brain and mitigates secretion of cortisol and other non- healthy body chemicals. I wanted to share Yorkshire Dale Dawn, from the 1001 Landscapes collection. A low horizon separates a warm band of orange from a darker, layered ground, with a thin line of bright yellow at the meeting point. Patches of indigo, umber and muted plum give it weight, while flecks of ochre and slate catch the eye. It has a quiet late-dusk mood, a gentle contrast of glow and shadow that feels grounded without shouting.
