Monet Moments
The painting 'Monet Moments' was inspired by the day I spent at the Monet Museum in Paris. I was completely mesmerized by the style in which the works were displayed. Firstly, the rooms were all gigantic and curved, and somehow the canvases of the paintings were seamlessly adhered to the walls so that you felt as though you were in the middle of Monet's garden. I have to admit it was even more impressive than actually being in Monet's garden. The other thing that completely transfixed me was the level of detail and non-detail in the paintings. I had never noticed how intentional Monet was in his use of color, to create eddies and pools of darkness, shadows and bursts of sunlight. Monet had a way of having hyper realistic or hyper focused moments in the paintings that grab the eye. Then, other moments or parts of the painting are purposely slightly blurry or less detailed and more about the qualities of chroma and depth. These completely impressionistic areas where he really let his brush go wild and allowed the canvas to be much darker, created a sense of true depth and even greater meaning for me. You can tell Monet loved the fluidity of light on water and foliage to the core of his soul. The total effect is one of majesty. For my painting, I tried to capture some essence of what Monet was doing, but with different method. So, first, I lay down washes of color across the canvas and added acrylic flow release media to ensure the colors both blended and attained a kind of will of their own. When this first layer was half dry but still sticky, I added more layers of color quite casually. I tried to keep the feeling of Monet's paintings in my spirit more than any attempt to reproduce his work. Then,I let the whole thing dry. A few days later, I added another very watery layer of color, and dabbled lighter pinks and coral tones by simply flicking my brush for ten minutes or so. When that paint was still moist, I added another layer of very light paint mixed with matte gel. I then added layers of cellophane to the wet paint. Once it had dried. I looked at all of the little creases and lines and which ones really transported me and which ones were less vibrant. Then I added more paint and another layer of cellophane let it dry. This process continued over the weeks, as a sporadically returned to work on the piece, until one day the canvas looked satisfied with itself. The whole time I purposefully went to a place in my mind where I was in the most beautiful serene and natural garden. That is to say a garden that had an underlying design but didn't look as though it was planned. It intentionally was allowed to be wild and free.
