Flower Power

One of my few regrets in life is that I haven't spent as much time as I wanted gardening. There is something about growing flowers from seed, watching the seedlings mature and then burst into bloom. There is just nothing like it. It's just a feeling of a fulfillment that life is worthwhile not to mention the beauty. A gift! One time I grew a flower that only bloomed at night. It was really incredible. It was a waxy looking climber whose leaves were gigantic, maybe 6 inches to 9 inches --and really looked like they were plastic. They were so shiny. Then all of a sudden one night it happened. The first bloom opened. It was white, the color of alabaster and slightly translucent. And it had a scent that was indescribable-kind of like the Calvin Klein perfume Obsession. Kind of spicy, faint and delicious. I never forgot that flower nor have I forgotten the Stock and Cosmos, Sunflowers, Orchids and other flowers I have had the honor of tending. For the last few years, I don't have a garden. In fact where I live now in a decommissioned Church there is no outside space. I started to think about how much I missed being around flowers So one day I covered a canvas with Gesso let it dry, then covered it with acrylic Matte sealant. Let it dry again. I decided not to think, and I started to simply let my fingers and my hands do what they wanted with various oil and acrylic paint pens. I didn't even look at what I was doing. I just wanted to experience the pure joy my heart, the radiance of blossoms in sunlight. After a time, I did look at it, and I was rather taken with it -- surprised actually. At that point, I put another layer of acrylic gel mat medium over it to create a little bit of depth, let it dry and then a layer of acrylic sealant. Then I touched it up with bits of very, very diluted acrylic paint. And then I covered that with sealant then when it had dried, I went back and with the acrylic marker pen, I made a few more circles of color, just a little punch. This painting always gives me so much joy and it always makes me smile.
