After mom died, I drove to NYC to the house where I grew up. As I was cleaning out my parents bedroom, I found a box on the top shelf of a closet. Inside the box, wrapped in tissue paper — were my very first shoes. They were only about two and a half inches long. Oddly, the shoes had been cut in half and tied together. Because I was born pigeon toed, my parents altered the shoes to retrain my feet to gradually move from pointing akimbo to pointing straight ahead. My mother, Nancy Sara, kept the shoes for 58 years. I hope that viewers will relate to the sense of deep caring and love that I felt from her. Our house is next to a cemetery and there I found the piece of wood on which the piece is mounted and crezted. I also incorporated objects I found in the house that day that I played with as a child, such as a Dreydl, some buttons and a glass jar top.
