I hope viewers will feel a bit like I do, awed and delighted. Rather than fearing storms, I find them endlessly fascinating and beautiful. On a deeper level, this painting is a mirror of the 'self'--externalized. Specifically, MYSELF! My whole life people have considered me to be unpredictable, stormy and prone to outbursts and moodswings. And for decades I internalized this as a negative judgment. A perception of me that I accepted as a badge of shame. My sister's husband even nicknamed me, 'Hurricane.' Only now that I am past 60 years old, have I come to accept and embrace my nature as true, honest and good. Powerful, energetic and creative too! For this piece used a selection of shells and pebbles I collected at some my favorite beaches. Goldsmith's Inlet, Southold Town Beach, Hashamamuck Pond, et alia. I also used copious dollops of gel media, 'edium thick and acrylic flow release to blend colors and textures while wet. I started with a lick layer of gesso. Then let it dry. Then another layer so the texture of the canvas would have teeth to hold onto thick paint and various substances like sand and pebbles, glitter and tiny gemstones. Then a week later, yet another thick gooey layer of gesso to make the canvas even mote sticky and receptive to many layers of paint, gel and small objects. Then several layers of swirling paint. And let each successive layer of paint and gel dry, and then seal it with a layer of clear acrylic matte gel. Then, using a wooden fork and spoon, I sculpted swirls and texturing onto the wet mass of gel, glue and so forth, in order to simulate the roiling seas.
