Fortschrittsleben (Life of Progress)
In the painting Fortschrittsleben, Veronika Spleiss explores the evolution of humankind’s achievements throughout history. The left side of the composition depicts some of humanity’s most groundbreaking inventions, while the right side reveals their coexistence with nature—or its destruction. On the left, the viewer encounters a train, electric scooters, cars, an aeroplane and a jet: modes of transportation that shape our increasingly digitalised world. At the centre of the painting, figures climb a suspended rope ladder—a metaphor for the effort, struggle and determination required to move forward. Two glowing lanterns illuminate the heart of the work, symbolising energy and electricity. On the right, a waterfall is surrounded by abundant flora and fauna. Yet why are human figures being carried downwards by the current? Are they moving in harmony with nature? Are they the price paid for progress, or are they simply surrendering joyfully to the flow of the water? The painting leaves these questions open, inviting the viewer to reflect on the complex relationship between technological progress, human ambition and the natural world.
