I created the work in the presence of and with the co-participation of my niece Alex, incorporating her suggestions. Rather than forcing horrifying traumatic explanations I wanted to allow her to lead with the perceptions and knowledge she already had. So flames were simply shown as triangular shards of yellow felt and people were shown as pastel and crayon turtles flying out of and around the building. I hope that viewers can empathize with this context and methodology. Not being a trained child counselor or teacher, I followed my own instincts. My purpose was never to diminish the tragedy but to create visual terms to allow Alex, then six years old, to begin to understand and process a sense of how the events were a tragedy. Not her fault, but something that would always be emblazened in memory like a tattoo or scar. I chose the felt, crayon, pastel and other materials because they are ones children can relate to and enjoy using.
