I think of my own father, Max, everyday since his funeral 29 years ago in 1997. The funeral took place on my Birthday, March 12th. The memory is actually a positive in the sense that my dad was the kindest, gentlest most literate person I have ever known. His love of reading and art was infectious and helped to shape and evolve my very best qualities. Though he was only 77, my father has lived a very healthy life. He never smoked, only had a glass of wine on Shabbat every Friday and was universally respected, loved and valued in our community. In our family we called him Our Hero. And that is on his tombstone. Our friends and relatives simply refer to Max Schwartz, my father as 'THE LEGEND.' The piece has a dual inspiration as it was also inspired by my love and passion for the inonic, unique Swedish music group known as Abba. They have always given me hope and joy and made me happy and sustained my mental and emotional state as a teenager and beyond ro this day! When I would stay up all night studying at 16 years old, I played Abba non-stop. It was the year their (but I didn't know it then) final album came out, The Visitors. Note, they did release a new forty years later and it is great, but that is another story. When my father came down for breakfast after one of my all night study and Abba sessions, he had actually memorized all the lyrics to the songs of the album. One of them, 'One of us is crying, one of us is lying in a lonely bed..' My dad actually sang the song beautifully over our morning coffee. I was surprised and touched. I hope viewers will see this piece as a small homage to teh people and things we love and cherish forever. I chose to use children's self-sticking felt and other craft items to allow myself to freely play with the concepts of ABBA both in the sense of Father (as in G-d), and Father as in my own dad, and out of my deep and abiding love for Abba the group!
