It was a dream inspired by the nightmare sequence from Fiddler on the Roof, wherein Fröme Sara, the dead wife of the Butcher Lazer Wolf, threatens to kill Tevya’s daughter if she marries Lazer Wolf. I hope viewers will enjoy the simple whimsy of the piece. So, ironically I had not yet seen the restored colorized version in 1986 when I but always loved the tender elegiac story. Marc Chagall designed the dream sequence and when you see it in color, it is so intense and terrifying you will understand why the studio bosses made Norman Jewison, the director, change that scene to black and white for the films release. The piece is a collage made from doodles I made on lined looseleaf paper and other odds and ends, as I sat in film archives in Yugoslavia and India (as well as Hungary, Australia, Bali, and Japan) studying Ritual in Film for a year for my Harvard undergrad degree in Visual and Environmental Studies. I had limited supplies while circumnavigating the globe that year. I chose the medium of fine art paper, pens, watercolor paints and glue to assemble a diarama like scene! I mailed it home to my parents in January 1986. Then I completely forgot about it for 39 years. I know this because the postmark is still on the poster tube which preserved the piece beautifully in a closet in my parents bedroom. I only discovered it a year ago after my mom passed away at 95 and I was cleaning out the beloved row house in Queens, NYC that my parents had bought when they were married in 1956. I was so moved, not by the painting itself, which is a pastiche by a 20 year old! What touched me deeply is the fact that my parents kept it safe and close to their hearts. Even when I discounted my own skills and talents and work, my parents never did. They always believed in me and valued me, no matter what I achieverd-- or not!
