Here’s "Words With Enemies," a compact study of objects and textures. Rectangular plates sit at oblique angles, scattered triangular fragments and folded pieces create fractured geometry, and three shallow bowls act as steady anchors. The inspiration to create this pieve was triggered by my older sister Laura's obsession with playing WORDS WITH FRIENDS. She is not only passionate about it, she is a total ace at the game because of her incredible vocabulary, and talent for finding the bon mot. She plays simultaneously 6 to who knows how many different matches with people all during the course of a few days. All her fellow players are in places as far flung as California and Europe. Once she was playing a game with a close friend of my moms who lived in Manhattan. Right at the finale of the game, he appeared to stop playing. Maybe he thought he had already lost? Certainly, my sister recounted, he about to lose. But she didn't hear from him again. It turned he experienced a sudden fatal heart attack. It occurred to me then how fascinating it would be to play the game with people I considered my arch enemies. Would the whole ritual take on different meanings, different nuances of thought, perception and feeling? What would be the colorscheme of 'words with enemies,' the game? Anyway, ponder that and I will try to describe how I attempted to depict a sort of cold strategic 'game' with one's foes. Muted pewter, olive, slate blue and ash hold small notes of ochre, pale pink and rust, with glossy pockets catching light against matte, crumbly surfaces. When I look closely I notice tiny embedded bits and pinprick holes that read like the residue of making and dismantling a puzzle box.
