I want to share Yellow Cake, part of my Objects series. It is painted on a wooden coffee table top I found lying outside an abandoned factory in Philadelphia. I love the shape and the sense of decay. Yellowcake is a manmade substance produced when Uranium is processed, either to make fuel for nuclear reactors...or if its highly processed to a greater concentration, for nuclear bombs! Yellow cake can also refer to Pound Cake, one of my favorite things in the world. Do you know why they call it Pound Cake? It is because traditionally the recipe includes a pound of flour, a pound of sugar, a pound of butter...and eggs. It is what I consider part of a healthy diet. A major food group if you will, on a level of importance with bacon and Count Chocula cereal. Let me describe the piece. I did not actually plan this out much, I just had an idea I wanted to make something a vaguely dangerous, peculiar radioactive vibe. An oval field of tarnished greens and burnished bronze sits across the surface, cut by three ochre-yellow bands whose fractured edges reveal darker layers beneath. There’s a quiet tension between areas that look abraded and patches that feel deliberately resurfaced, and the surface changes as you move around it. It’s restrained and tactile, the kind of piece that holds its place above a mantel or in an entryway. #yellowcake #abstractart #uranium #danielaaronschwartz #buyartonline
