Often as a child, my mother left me in the care of my sister Laura, whom we all called Lolly. Laura was and is kind but tough. Stubborn like all my siblings, as the eldest there is a kind of tenacious strength and fierce pride to Lolipop. I remember how, like my mother, she completely placed her confidence and trust in me in places like beaches. She did not actually supervise or watch over me, which I appreciated, even as a 5 year old. Instead she would remind me that she trusted me to be aware of my surroundings at all times and to take full responsibility for my own safety. Clearly, she had better things to do and so did I. Amethyst is my sister's February Birthstone. Ranging from soft pale lilac and light pinkish violet to deep, vibrant royal purple, it was my Grandma Pearls favorite gemstone. She gave my sister an elegant, small ring with an Amethyst set in it that she was given by her mother. My sister Laura always wore it, except on the beach. Like my sister, Amethysts rate high on the hardness scale, making them very scratch-resistant and hardy.Symbolically Amethysts represents peace, inner calm, mental clarity, and protection. And my sister always did protect me. I hope viewers find a sense of tactile pleasure in the seemingly random, yet carefully positioned and arranged objets. They are all things I love having around me to gaze upon and touch. This work is meant to celebrate the visual fun and joy of beach combing and the endurance of love and caring family. I chose to use items that I found, either by the sea or in the Dollar Store. Little pieces of discarded jetsam that are both unusual and beautiful. I arranged them in a sacremental, ritualistic way. I wanted the piece and the things it contained to seem casual yet intentional. All of them cohering as if they were meant to be together.
