FOUND ON LONG ISLAND SOUND has a quiet rhythm: warm, earthy colors sit beside small, worn objects and simple tools, their edges and smudges tracing a day’s work. I like that it reads like an archive of gestures, with dense, tactile clusters next to lighter, open areas and a few bright flecks that make you pause. Part of the 1001 Landscapes series, it is all laid out over the course of about three years of sporadic work layering items and color. The wood base is something I found in the storage shed wedged 25 feet under my Tennessee Log cabin. The storage shed was something I discovered in mid-winter a month after I moved in. It was a decaying shabby wooden structure perched on the side of the mountain and mounted to the house foundation. It was worth climbing down to it because I found incredible treasures there, like this 7 feet by 14 inch piece of solid oak! After spreading out and arranging shoe boxes full od 59 years of my beach finds, I would douse the objects in craft paints to both weather and tie the elements of the assemblage together. Mostly pinks, cream, coral, peaches and other pastels. I would glue the larger pieces straight to the wood with epoxy, Gorilla Glue and let the smaller ones simply lie on or next to the weightier main 'subject' objects. I would then wait a day or so for the epoxy to set. Then, I would douse the whole thing in big gallon bottles of Modge Podge Matte craft glue and sealant. Following this orgy of creative mayhem, I would wait 2-4 months for the flotsam and jetsam soup of memory to dry and cure. Then look at it again with more objective eyes. Sure I like my work to be messy but sometimes I would pry up whole areas of the work to better guide the eye to important areas. Then, as they say, rinse and repeat. No, I never actually rinsed it but I did repeat the ritual of layered transformation over and over again. At least eight or nine times over several years. One day FOUND ON LONG ISLAND SOUND looked back at me and told me that it was done!
