Roulin redoubt was inspired by my love for all things Star Trek. Specifically the original series as the Next Generation always has seemed kind of silly to me. There's something so true about the original cast, aesthetic style and vision. It is so 1960s, yet also so timeless and primal. While I am very loyal to the original series one of my favorite of the new batch of movies is the one with the Romulan Supervillain who is caught in a time repeating vortex. He keeps saying, 'prepare the red-matter.' The red-matter, of course, is a super powerful substance that looks like blood and can destroy whole planets with this horrifying power. He destroys Vulcan killing Spock's mother and other millions of Von Vulcans Anyway, there's something about this movie in particular that really grabs me. Especially since as far as I know, it's the last movie with Leonard Nimoy, the original Spock. Spock keeps popping up in this weird little spaceship and ends up saving the day, of course. I created this piece using acrylic paint-markers, Sharpies, acrylic paint, and frustration. The piece itself was not frustrating to create. This period of my life was challenging, as I was caring for my mother, who was in an assisted living home. And we both knew her time was drawing to an end. It was a particularly difficult period for me. But ultimately also very fulfilling. I felt very confronted by my own failures in life, and these shameful feelings felt like daggers pointing at my heart. The piece is meant to capture that feelings of inner conflict, or of an inflection pount in life. I felt acutely aware of my age, my career choices and my crisis of spirit. That and a lack of decision making abilities. I felt sharp thoughts pointing at me like daggers, aimed at my heart and at my soul. Like so many things that we put on canvas, the conflict, pain and frustration are somehow less powerful and painful having put sealed them into the work. There the daggers can harmlessly revel in their evil like the Romulan Warlord or perhaps the mythic portrait of Dorian Grey. What do you think about Romulan Eedoubt? It provided catharctic release from anger, sorrow and grief.
