Cannes and Cannot

I spent a lot of time in France when I was younger. Mostly in Avignon. Jouie Le Moutier, Nice and Cannes. I loved the Mediterranean climate and sun. I often look back on those days nostalgically. In truth, while this was an exciting time in my life full or surprises, adventures and pleasure, it was also a period of tremendous drama. Not all of the drama was fun. I decided to make a piece that evoked all of it, the joy, the ecstasy, the gambles znd razmatazz. And also, the threatening possibilities of loss and despair. I used items I had accumulated in my parents house in NY, in my so called SECRET DRAWER. It was the top drawer of my three drawers in the bedroom I shared with my two older brothers. Later I learned the drawer was not secret at all. My mother and siblings dipped into it frequently. Such are the clandestine foibles of youth. I first covered the canvas in swatches of golden honeysuckle, peach and ocher. Then sketched in the black lines that imprisoned my hopes, dreams and goals. Finally I glued some of the items I had secreted in my dufflebag all those years ago from all my exploits. I could tell a lot of stories about them, but perhaps better not.
