When I was overseeing a new series pilot in Cambodia I used go for long walks in the forests. Many of them seemed older than time. Deep indigo in the light of dusk and impenetrably twisted with gnarled roots and branches. Vines had a will of their own. Sometimes I came upon little altars with magenta flowers and mauve lilies placed in little sippy cups. The forest were old and yet the dainty flowers in the plastic cups seemed to have placed there moments before I discovered them. Other evenings I would find the detritus of French Outposts-- abandoned there before they departed and took most of the countries infrastructure with them! In a dense thicket I found the outer wall of a former train station, with faded signage and rusted tracks under feet of ferns and ivy. This inspired me to use a layered approach in recreating the emotion and tender sorrow that imbued this great country. While working on the piece in 2016, I was always multi tasking --planning my first solo exhibition in Paris. I must have absentmindedly taken a phone call and wrote some notes on the canvas in felt pen. Lots of references to the Punk Band Pussy Riot, whose imprisoned members were the subject of that exhibit. Months later when I returned from Paris and started working on this piece again, I saw my scribbling and laughed. Rather than trying to mask or point over it, I decided it was fitting and actually added to the piece. Everything I do feels like a Palimpsest, a work that is written over and over over aeons and obscured, forgotten and then rediscovered.
