Death Valley Dusk
I have visited Death Valley only once. Despite the forbidding nature of this harsh desert environment, there is so much life in this vast, beautiful area. It is wonderful it has made into sanctified protected land for the most part because there is millions of years of natural history here. In order to attempt to depict the distinct arresting presence and power of this place, I added a lot of textural elements. Thick matte gel medium, that I carved with a tiny wooden fork to suggest a forgotten language from aeons ago. I also created a kind of mimesis, or unexact mirror of this visual motive in a stripe at the top of the canvas. The colors themselves may not seem particularly unique to the casual viewer. An ochre, umber, bronze, rust colored desert by any other name would still containmany shades of sienna, taupe, and greige. However, the special and profound effect this place has on those who visit goes beyond mere chroma. Rather it is the way the light caresses and dances over these tones og shadows and light that make it dynamic and thrilling to behold. I hope some of my passion for Death Valley is evoked in the viewer.
