PEAT BOG, Jutland- Denmark

Jutland Peat Bog is an artwoek inspired by a series I produced called Mummies Unwrapped. In the show we had an episode about the discovery in Denmark of ancient Mummies in the Peat Bog. These are very dense acidic marshes. In these marshes, they found these horrifically murdered Vikings. The bodies were perfectly preserved, although the swamp mud turned the colorof their skin black. Yet their faces and entire bodies looked as if they had died in that moment. Many even looked as though they were simply asleep. I was inspired to do a piece that evoked the sense of the Peat Bogs. I didn't want to copy a picture of one of the mummies. Instead, I tried to evoke what a Peat Bog looks and feels like. I also wanted to suggest a little bit of the mood when you find something hundreds or thousands of years old. I used a technique I enjoy of doing many layers of paint over several weeks. The layers arz separated by periods where I wrap the whole wet canvas in cellophane. Then I let it dry, peel off the cellophane, then repeat the process until it feels 'done.'
