Malibu Maelstrom
I was both transfixed and disturbed when I at images of Malibu burning. The inferno vaporized so many places I had visited, eaten at, and enjoyed. Carlos, a former boyfriend who was studying at Pepperdine, lived in an adorable bungalo on stilts over the ocean. Gone, without a trace, among with Iconic restaurants and stretches of fantasy homes on the ocean. There was one photograph that was genuinely something out of a 1970's disaster movie. A luxurious contemporary Mediterranean style home perched on the Malibu hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The security door camera captured footage of the flames on the other side of the walled in property. Within a minute the flames over towered over the wall, reaching the front door. Then the camera went dead. In attempting to depict this, I avoided the temptation to copy a photo of the house. Instead I wanted to use color and abstract shapes to signify the calamity and universalize the sheer terror of nature so enraged and out of control. I used thick Quinadacrone reds and yellows and cerulean to capture a sense of Paradise Lost.
