Hampstead Heath is a massive, wild public park in London spanning 790 acres, offering a stark, rural escape just four miles from the center of London. It inspired famous works by painter John Constable and writer C.S. Lewis series, The Chronicles of Narnia. Through the years I have always made a trip to the park everytime I visit friends in London. Usually I find the bucolic setting relaxing and inspiring. But until December, 2018 I had always visited the park in mid-Spring, Summer or early Autumn. The experience of Hampstead Heath in late December worlds away from my fond memories. The weather was damp, cold, drizzly and dark with low clouds. The Heath was stark, bleak and depressing. I tried to capture this in the painting. I used layers of light paint watered down with Acrylic Flow Medium. While the paint was still wet I wrapped the painting in plastic cellophane. Then I came to it a few days later, peeled off the plastic and worked on it more. I did only five different cellophane painting layers on this piece because it quickly took on bleak mood of that afternoon. I used Muted Rust, Pea Green and Puce, like you used to see on the walls of elementary schools. For me, it truly captures the chilly hopelessness of Hampstead Heath on a rainy December afternoon.
