Flotsam are things that float up to shore, be they driftwood, seashells, seaweed, dead crabs, sand and so forth. Jetsom are things that are thrown off boats intentionally or otherwise. I have always enjoyed the visual spectacle of this combination of artifacts one enjoys while strolling down the beach. It is a kind of active, yet seemingly random work of art as one strolls. I created Flotsam and Jetsom using, no surprise, a cornacopia of items I have collected over decades walking along the beach. It may be that these mini hikes are my favorite pastime. I dumped out several shoe boxes of my beach baubles onto the wooden floor of my porch, picking out items that grabbed my eye or fond recollections. I don't always remember all the names of my classmates but I do remember virtually every object I found and where I found it. I filled a large basket with these cherished items and tossed them into pre-gessoed canvas that I had prepared. Then I arranged the items absentmindedly at first, to attempt to make them seem randomly washed up. Then I covered the whole canvas with a quarter of craft glue. Before the glue fully dried, I painted on it with blues, greens and teal shades. Those brushes were of course ruined because it is impossible together all the glue off painbrushes. Then I removed objects that seemed to be detracting rather than additive to the spell. I then slathered more glue over the thing and started to pour a thick layer of white glitter down the middle. Cobalt, Cerulean and other shades of glitter on both sides of the canvas Over several months this process of layering, adding and removing continued. I attempted to retain the random quality of the 'washed up' materiele while also making sure that the trail of 'treasure' and trash would guide the eyeline to move around and across the artwork.
