Saboteur Serenade
Salvatore Serenade is a painting about bad dreams. Usually the dream starts rather pleasantly. I'm wandering through a moonlight forest at midnight. The orb of the lunar majesty is at its height. And then it happens: I find myself myself in a in a romantic Glade. There are strange translucent beings in the Glade, and they are all singing. Their voices are high and horrid. I soon realized they're singing about me and nothing good about them or their intentions. Their singing is always very unpleasant. These are my critics, and these are evil sprites. I always wake up from these dreams in a clammy sweat. But what do these dreams mean really? Are they just free-floating anxiety? I said about attempting to depict what I saw and experienced in the dream in a work of art. I started by painting, layers and layers of dark colors, blues greens, charcoal. I covered each layer of paint, once dried, with a layer of sealant. I like the way this Matte gel sealant protects the layer below, but not completely. Then after a while, I start to doodle in white acrylic paint pens. What comes up are these sort of skeletal ephemeral creatures. The creatures have a glow, but it's a cold glow. And all the creatures do is amplify the negative thoughts I have already. The creatures are also multiphasic. What I mean by this is they're not distinctly one creature that is to say each of the evil beings is actually several personalities and several creatures. And they all have nothing good to say about me. After a while, I switched to yellow acrylic, pens and neon, green and other colors to try to accentuate the piercing nastiness of this chorale. As I continue to work on the piece, I'm less bothered by the things that these creatures are chanting and more involved in how interesting it all looks. I tend to work on paintings like this upside down. And so after a few minutes, I turn the whole thing upside down and then I worked on the rest of the piece that way. I find that when it's difficult for me to visualize something, turning things upside down actually helps. In this way, I tend to see things more accurately, rather than trying to put words into what I thought I saw. What do you think of my Saboteur Serenade?
