Red, White and Chewed

RED, WHITE AND CHEWED is a sad meditation on the current atmosphere and reality in the USA. The depiction of the flag is meant to be oblique rather than literal. Faded Crimson like dried blood, yellowing, decayed stripes like paper molding in a dark cellar, and blue that is tinged with flakes and tears. I used bubble wrap, cellophane and heavy books to weight each layer. The pressed and crunched up crinkled plastuc left paradoxically organic looking stains, watermarks and a sense of a textile once beautiful but aging in wretched torpor. Kind of like the United States of America right now, huh. I have recently adapted this basic leitmotif for several different designs on merchandise, such as tote-bags, mugs, yoga mats and t-shirts. Oddly enough, these sardonic, even morose items are selling better right now than anything else in my gift store!
