Breaking Thru the Interstellar is an artwork that is inspired by my love of science fiction. To create a fantasy of interstellar travel, I got out all my favorite children's craft materials. Stick on felt in orange, pink and other colors, glitter bedazzled stick-on felt in mauve, violet and other candy corn orange, and a whole plethora of other items. There are pieces of watch works, sparkly sequins, little bangles, beads, metal straps, and other bright and shiny objects I have collected over the last few decades. I started with layers of diluted acrylic paint. Once it was dry, I added a layer of gel sealant. Then more very light layers of acrylic paint. Then I tossed onto the canvas a few handfuls of various fun items I had collected. I move the items around on the canvas until it looked like something happening in outer space. Perhaps a supernova? When I was happy enough with the arrangement of items, I poured a layer of about a quarter inch of craft glue over the whole canvas. Once the glue began to cure and become translucent, I used my fingernails to scrape off anything that didn't look like it 'fit.' This process of gluing and scraping off items and gluing again and adding and subtracting elements continued for several weeks. Then when the conglomeration was starting to look like a galaxy or at least a constellation, I took a hard long look at the piece. I then started to work with the pre-glued stick-on felt. The same process as before with the glue on felt and glitter... adding, removing, repositioning. All by instinct. You know there's a lot of work that goes into making an interstellar break -thru, let alone a mere nebula or galaxy.
