Asmat Artifact
I first became fascinated by the Papua New Guinea Asmat Tribe when I was a teenager. I would go to the NY Metropolitan Museum of Art after school to do my homework. I would sit in the large Hall right by the Temple of Dendur. Just around the cornee was a (then small) exhibit of the Asmat Art Michael Rockefeller collected in Papua New Guinea. The artworks all were spiritual, living beings to the Asmat, portals to communicate with theie ancestors. These forebears were thought to be still living in the forests, but invisible. Supposedly by the time Michael Rockefellee visit in the early 1960's the Asmat had given up Cannabalism. However, Michael Rockefellers mysterious disappearance casts doubt on this. Just last year, an entire new Michael Rockefellee wing opened at the museum! I was dazzled and moved by all the great works it showcased. Afterwards, digging through my old faded sketches, I found several works that were clearly inspired by my teenaged hours in the museum. I used a large piece of wood I had found to create a ceremonial totem or homage, to Michael Rockefeller, and the Great Art of the Asmat.
