This piece is dedicated to great singer Dusty Springfield. Words cannot express her talent, her vocal acumen and breadth of intelligence. Language also fails us when it comes to comprehending how much pain she endured and how misunderstood she was. In the eatly 1960's in London, Dusty became a household name and had a hit television show. In the UK at that time, being a popstar and being an openly gay woman were not compatible. over time, living a double life took a toll. Drugs, alcohol and violent love affairs left hee physical broken, yet not spiritually in despair. Dusty dusted herself off, moved to the United States and created a new break through album and sound when she recorded DUSTY IN MEMPHIS. She wrecked her health and died before she turned 60. Dusty Springfield: The Lonely Stage is titled to be intentionally ambiguous. Both the actual stages where Dusty sang before millions were ultimately lonely. And her life also grew increasingly isolated, anxious and withdrawn. I used a cut-up technique to create this piece. I had read about author Boroughs use of this technique. David Bowie also adopted it. The idea is to juxtapose seemingly random elements and create unique aesthetics and meanings that illuminates and reveals true intention and meaning. I cut up magazines into little pieces and crumpled onto the canvas. Then painted. The portrait of Dusty in the center behind the dark curtain was cut out from a completely different painting.
