My practice is grounded in a sustained material and perceptual investigation of Serra da Estrela, Portugal. I approach the mountain as an archive and territory as a method: not as a landscape to be represented, but as a geological system whose processes inform the construction of painting. With a geological history extending back more than 541 million years, Serra da Estrela has been shaped by tectonic uplift, Quaternary glaciation, granite weathering, fluvial erosion, sediment transport and a long history of human occupation. These processes provide the scientific and conceptual framework for my artistic research. Across my practice, I work with acrylics, gesso, raw or prepared cotton, natural sand and mineral sediments collected in Serra da Estrela. I translate operations observed within the territory — accumulation, abrasion, fracture, infiltration, displacement, sedimentation, removal and exposure — into large-scale abstract surfaces. I allow materials to flow, absorb, settle, resist and partially obscure earlier layers. Each painting develops as a material record of pressure, duration and transformation rather than as an image of a mountain, river or glacier. Blue is central to my current research, but I treat it as a responsive field rather than a fixed colour. Its behaviour changes according to light, material density, surface absorption, scale, viewing distance and the movement of the viewer through space. The painted surface therefore operates simultaneously as archive, memory and territory while remaining resolutely abstract.The work does not illustrate Serra da Estrela. It records the physical operations through which this specific territory was formed and continues to change, rather than representing a particular place or view. Sonia J.
