Elephants in Ancient Egypt was inspired by the fascinating roles Elephants have played throughout human history. The relationship between Egypt and elephants shifted dramatically across different eras, transitioning from sacred indigenous wildlife to exotic royal trophies, and finally to weapons of war. Early Extinction and the Ivory Trade (Predynastic & Old Kingdom): Elephants were native to Egypt during prehistoric times. The ancient Egyptians called the elephant Ꜣbw (Abu), which was also the word for "ivory". As the climate dried and overhunting took its toll, native elephants became extinct in Egypt during the First Dynasty (around 2600 BCE). This work is composed of 9 separate canvas fiberboards that were painted separately during differently during different months and years. Only much later when I reviewed the assorted drawings, I noticed that these 9 specific pieces seemed thematically linked to a story. The pastiche of seemingly random compositions and color palettes actually formed a coherent, if admittedly modular artwork!
