The Root Remains is a unique mixed-media sculpture created from naturally grown olive root wood and approximately 600 individually hand-cut slices of recycled wine corks. The original form, grain, natural openings, and irregular edges of the olive root remain visible and determine the entire composition. Rather than imposing a predetermined form on the material, I respond to the structure already created by nature. The layered cork slices follow the movement of the wood and form a tactile relief. Many of the cork slices display different motifs, symbols, and markings on their surfaces. These visible traces originate from the corks’ previous lives and give each fragment its own identity. Their repetition creates rhythmic structures, while the differences between the individual motifs are deliberately preserved. The work explores resilience, memory, origin, and transformation. Although the visible tree no longer exists, the root remains as a carrier of life and accumulated time. The recycled wine corks introduce further traces of cultivation, human use, travel, and past experiences. Together, wood and cork form a sculptural object situated between natural growth and deliberate artistic creation. The Root Remains is a handcrafted, one-of-a-kind artwork created in Aachen, Germany. The sculpture can be presented as a freestanding object or displayed on a wall using an appropriate mounting system.
