In the Path of Being is a unique mixed-media sculpture created from smoked oak and approximately 1,600 individually hand-cut slices of recycled wine corks. The elongated, naturally grown form of the wood provides the foundation of the artwork. Its grain, dark and light areas, and irregular contours remain visible and determine the direction of the composition. The cork slices were arranged by hand in multiple layers and follow the natural movement of the smoked oak. This creates a tactile relief that reveals new depths, structures, and shadows when viewed from different perspectives. Many of the cork slices display original motifs, symbols, letters, and markings on their surfaces. These traces from the corks’ previous lives are not concealed but deliberately preserved. Each slice represents an individual experience, memory, encounter, or decision. Together, the many fragments form a path without losing their individual identities. The work explores human existence as a continuous process. Our individual paths do not develop in straight lines but are shaped by changes, interruptions, decisions, and experiences. What has already passed remains part of our history and continues to influence what we become. In the Path of Being was handcrafted in Aachen, Germany, and is a one-of-a-kind artwork. The sculpture can be presented as a freestanding object or displayed on a wall using an appropriate professional mounting system.
