BLUE MONDAY is a dresser I found in Knoxville in a thrift store going out of business. Originally it was unpainted and old varnish cracked, peeled, flaked and faded. I spent several weeks on my porch, sanding all the layers of varnish off, wearing an uncomfortable respirator. After removing all the gunk, there were still bumps and other icky bits. So I switched up the sand paper and electric sander settings to smooth out all the surfaces. Then several coats of primer. Months went by as I stared the dresser, trying to envision it as something wondrous! Without making a conscious choice I began to layer coats of oil paint in various blue hues. A year or so later I started flicking my brush off on it with extra paint from whatever other art pieces I was working. This continued sporadically from 2008 and 2017. I moved four times with the unfinished dresser! From Knoxville to Boston, from Boston to Washington DC, from DC back to Knoxville, then to Philadelphia where I currently have my studio!
