An ecotone plateau is not a single standard term in earth science. Instead, it combines two distinct geographical and ecological concepts: an ecotone--a transition area where two different ecosystems meet and blend, and a plateau--a large, flat area of high land. When these ideas are used together, they are describing a high, flat elevated tableland that functions as an ecological border zone between major biomes, climate types, or plant communities. I am fascinated by liminal or border regions such as Ecotone Plateaus. The elevation of Plateaus often creates distinct local weather patterns, wind exposure, and temperature drops compared to lowlands. Ecotone refers to a Transition Zone: a boundary area where two different ecosystems mix. It contains a blend of species from both sides alongside unique ones adapted specifically to the border environment. The Ecotone Plateau in this painting is of the high-elevation arid regions in Patagoni. What amazed about this unique part of Argentuna was how radical the shift is between the bone dry, desert floor, arid steppes and elevated areas where Snow Leopards and other unique animal and plants thrive. I deployed thick matte gel media for texture and a palette of muted yellows, bronze, gold and other desaturated colors. I also worked in generous amounts of glitter to suggest the magical almost mystical of this border region.
