When I was around 12 years old, I read a book of short stories called EVERYTHING THAT RISES MUST CONVERGE. I did not really understand this idea at the time. Several decades later, I happen to re-read the story and it hit with the produndity of true EUREKA. The expression "everything that rises must converge" means that people with different beliefs, backgrounds, or social levels will eventually come together or face the same final result. It points to a shared human journey where our paths cross or lead to the same truth in the end. The phrase is the title of a famous short story collection by author Flannery O'Connor. O'Connor took the idea from the writings of the French philosopher Teilhard de Chardin. De Chardin believed the universe moves toward a single spiritual point called the Omega Point. Here is where the concept really hit home for me: Core Ideas: Social Climbing: It pokes fun at people who try to rise above others in social class. Shared Fate: No matter how high you go, we all share the same basic human condition. Inevitable Unity: Conflicting views often crash together into a common reality. The piece riffs via a series of doodles of cartoon like characters in a loose semblance of a story or series of events. The artwork is composed of 15 separate canvas boards joined and bonded onto a single larger canvas. Neon yellow, Fluorecents yellows, orange and greens, Crimson, Vermillion, cerulean, pinks, royal blues, periwinkle, azure, ochre and black Sharpie outlined figures cavort across a chaotic landscape of seemingly disparate narratives with no commonality. The leitmotif of dappled yellow shapes provides a path for the eye. In the center of the piece are three smaller canvas boards with a different color palette. Arranged from the bottom upwards, from larger objects to smaller, are various old jar tops. The round jartops appear to be related though they are painted very differently from one another. At the very top center of the canvas the smallest jartop is painted solid Royal Blue. This is meant to serve as a central resting place for the viewer's eyes. This jar top signifies de Chardin's Omega Point, the convergent spiritual point that the universe moves towards.
