forgotten Philadelphia is a painting I did because I kept passing really fascinating abandoned areas while I was driving to see my mother who was in assisted-living. One of the things I found most fascinating about these neighborhoods was how they appear to not just be abandoned, but also damaged in many ways. For example, many of the neighborhoods looked like they had had major fires. Whole blocks of houses were burnt out. Another fascinating thing was the odd objects and things that one saw on these blocks and in these neighborhoods. For example, in this case they were piles and piles of old car tires lying around. I often wondered why, but never really came to a satisfactory answer despite looking online. I kept the painting very very spare. I simply sketched some lines in charcoal from my memory of the scene. I was gonna go back and correct the horizon line and fill in more details. But every time I did, I was struck by how effective this very spare minimalist piece was --as is. It looked unfinished and after a time, I decided it was meant to be that way. So I decided to just leave it because it kind of grew on me this sense of minimalistic despair.
