Svalbard, Norway is one of the Northernmost human outposts on earth. Historically a whaling and mining location, now mostly scientists, those with reclusive temperament and workers at the mining company still operating there. Polar Bears are a real danger. Night comes in November and stays for months. Colors are intense, deep midnight blue and faded magenta and pregnant icy eggplant. The Northern lights are everpresent and the magnetic field here wobbles and shifts. That being shared, there are no big cats in Svalbard whatsoever. I was working on the painting while reading a National Geographic story about a photographer to Svalbard. I was envious and enraptured by her courage and sense of adventure. While I was pondering this stark majestic place, my 20 year old cat, Neta, strolled across the wet painting. I left her pawprint there. She has every right to be an artist!
