South Knoxville bleeds into rural from town. It is one of our nations few temperate rain forests. In Spring and Summer the foliage would become impenetrable but in winter I could see for miles all the way to the next ridge. I felt hidden, protected and tucked away in my secret mountain aerie. Then, one day while driving, I saw my own cabin from several miles off, alone on the hill at the top, naked in the winter grey. For the first time I saw that if I can see for miles from my house, others can see me! What I can see also makes me visible. This epiphany stayed with me. The simple reality never bothered. I thought it wonderful how the line of sight can be both revealing and deceptive. I spy with my little eye! The eyes have it. In some sense, aren't we all just eyes? I hope viewers will feel the same joy and sense of discovery I did creating it. I chose to use markers, crayon, acrylic and to create symbolic, repetive shapes rather than naturalistic eyes.
