“Joslyn” Whispers in Purple Flow is a new oil painting where I’ve explored the delicate balance between vivid color and serene presence. Measuring 61 by 61 centimeters with a 1 1​/​2-inch depth on a gallery-wrapped canvas, this portrait centers on a face defined by soft, pale tones and strikingly large blue eyes, set against a steady blue background that invites quiet reflection. The hair moves freely, painted in layered purples with light highlights, bringing a sense of motion and life that contrasts with the calm expression. I incorporated abstract markings—red, blue, and brown strokes—across the face and neck to deepen the texture and emotional complexity. Creating this piece reminded me how much portraiture allows us to explore identity beyond the literal, combining both abstraction and realism to celebrate the unique, often unseen flows within us. Working with oil paint on this scale provided a rewarding interaction between layering and blending, resulting in a vibrant yet thoughtful composition that encourages connection and introspection.
