The second time I went to Hawaii to take an intensive yoga class I had a big surprise. On the drive from the airport, I was told that a giant volcano was erupting actively. I really haven't thought about what the term actively meant. That is until we got on the main road up to Kehlani the yoga center where I was kicking an intensive workshop. The road itself had been destroyed. There was hardened, lava or rather magma or whatever it was black glass like rock 20 feet over the highway it completely blocked and destroyed the way. The driver had no compunction about the situation nor did he seem disturbed. Instead, he made a right onto the lava field and simply drove over it and around the giant hill of lava over the road. I was completely stunned. Then he said the Driver, I mean, he said, look to the right! So I looked to the right and I saw a flow of yellow yellow lava but if you haven't seen it in person, it's difficult to describe. I saw a glowing 10 more than one actually of this molten light flowing into the ocean really it was spilling into the ocean like a glowing waterfall of the sun. I have to say to this day. It is one of the most momentous powerful or inspiring sites I have ever seen. So I decided I wanted to somehow capture this feeling. I've done other paintings about lava and volcanoes and so forth, but I really wanted to do one that captured the imagination. So instead of actually painting the lava itself flowing I thought I would paint the inside of the volcano something like the pipes or the center where it began to bubble. I opted for a mixed media technique first painting, swaps of color, water down, juicy paint using acrylic flow medium. Then I put cellophane over the whole thing while it was still wet and let it dry for a few days. After that, I examine the peace and I saw some beautiful crinkles and bubbles and things that suggested lava. But the piece still looked pretty shotty and haphazard. So I decided to opt for a big sloppy layered approach, one of my favorites. Every few days I would peel off the cellophane and do another stripe or layer of something mostly embers and dark reds and rust colors, ocher, sunlight, buttercup, yellow, and so forth after a few layers or a few rounds of this process, I took a break. Then when I went back, I worked over the whole thing with various acrylic paint pens. I'd make circles or little triangles or little tens suggest in a spray of molten lava into the air. After a few months of sporadically going back to the peace it really excited me and It said to me I am done. Leave me alone! So here it is Kilauea Caldara. What do you think of Kilauea Caldara?
