Lilies of the Lowlands was inspired by my time visiting the Bogs of Jutland, Denmark. I did another painting of the marshes called Lollipo Bog, but actually the flowers were lilies. Similar to the ones that you would see in a pond. Large, robust, yet delicate in pale cream, Lilac and Peach. I was impressed by how large they were and how lovely the petals of the lilies were. They seemed completely transparent. Their translucency reflected the sunlight and they seemed to glow. I used layers of paint separated by cellophane which would peel off between successuve paint washes. This was intended to create the impression of soft squishy marshes. I also used acrylic paint pens to outline and accentuate the flowers.
