The Mojave desert is hot. And it is also a fascinating unique ecosystem, full of rare plant species and wildlife. People think of a mirage when they see movies set in the Sahara desert in North Africa. However, the phenomenon is actually rather common the dry heat of the American west. While driving down a straight road in 100 degree heat, I would the cars, cacti and mountains before me in the distance all floating well above the road and the actual surface where they actually were. The colors of the mojave are rich and saturated. Rust colored mountains dappled with golden light, light sage cacti and reddish taupe earth. I used acrylic paint markers to create the floating effect of the mountains and scenery.
