Mommy and Me is about the inextricably powerful bond of love and gratitude I feel towards my mother. When she passed away two years ago on June 10th, at age 95, a great light in my world was extinguished, I thought. Yet, when my mom was beginning to cognitively decline she would wake up from her frequent with questions like, 'Is my mother Pearl still alive? Because I want her to be alive.' I would tell my mother Nancy Sara Sherman Schwartz that grandma Pearl would always be alive in our hearts. This is also true for our parents when they seem to leave forever. I had found an old canvas that at one point I had apparently worked on so hard that I ripped a hole in its center. I must have thrown it under a pile of other discarded works because I only rediscovered in on June 11, 2024, the day after mom died. I noticed the canvas had layers of paint, acrylic marker scribbling and a look of an ancient scroll or tattered garment. The rich umber, earthen reds and copper tones reminded me of the dyes made in biblical times from berries and fruit. Mom would have enjoyed those colors and appreciated the very fact that I thought of her. She always loved all my efforts to create, no matter how primitive.
