Moorland

I was inspired to create Moorland by some of my travels in Europe. Specifically when I was working in Bath, England and I used to take walks at Dawn. Strolling aimlessly through meadpws and dales, I would find these very peculiar yet precious and beautiful areas near forest but not quite in the forest at Dawn there was always a kind of magical mist and the brambles which were just becoming green. And it was early April, so not Spring in Bath but very moist! The budding leaves had a kind of magical incandescent or fluorescent quality. Almost a glow from within. I wanted to capture this in the painting and so I created a kind of matrix of different layers. I would do a layer of a color, a simple color and then another color and while it was still wet, I would very gently scratch it with my fingers so that the paint would both blend and separate then I would let it dry in a couple days later I would do another layer and a couple days later in another layer playing around with chroma and gels and Matt finish mediums and after a few months of working on it maybe every week I decided I was satisfied.
