Munga Thirri Simpson Desert, Australia

This painting is about the feeling one gets shen one one is in the desert in Australia in the middle of nowhere. Specifically, the Munga Thirri Simpson Desert. There's a sense of almost being in a completely different world. It's like being on Mars, but it's a different world than Mars. The air is so dry that your lungs filled with the searing heat. And the beauty is so crystal clear because what you're seeing though part of a country still feels very untouched. I created this work with medium acrylic gel. I also used thick gel in places to create a sense of texture and weight. I kept the color palette very simple. This is not to say the colors in the desert in Australia are simple, but I was trying to create a very basic emotional vibe. That is to say a feeling of clarity and an uplifting emotion. I also used a great deal of glitter, mostly white glitter that I embedded in the gel. Mountains are not meant to be realistic, obviously more a sense of memory and distilled experience.
