The painting, called Neglected Nook, was inspired by my drive every day from Fishtown Philadelphia up to Dresher Estates, where my mother was in an assisted living facility. Every day I was amazed at how many buildings in Philadelphia were abandoned, and how many neighborhoods were simply ghost towns. One day I saw a little girl on a tricycle merrily cycling along, the only soul I saw for blocks. She could not have been more than four years old and appeared to unafraid of anything. She was on what appeared to be a completely abandoned block in a completely woebegone area of Germantown. And yet, the little girl seemed really happy. This unusual joy amidst despair is what inspired the painting. This is a very simple painting. I did a little sketch with charcoal from memory and then added a few layers of acrylic over a few months. I didn't really think it was finished. However, after a time it grew on me just the way it was. I hope you enjoy it.
