IT WAS while I was living in Westchester, Los Angeles. The little bungalow I was renting had a larg, open but covered porch. Next to the porch but not under it was a small rectangular dirt area of about 12' feet by 3'. It was a shaded area that was utterly barren so I tried an experiment to create my first shaded garden. In February, I planted the large seeds of a climbing perennial said to have shiny waxy leaves and large white blossoms. As the plants grew and dutifully climbed the cinderblock enclosure I grew more and more excited. But though the plants produced buds, it did not seem to ever flower. Then one night I realized the buds only unfolded at night! And the flowers only lived for one night as well. This night blooming Lily that climbed up my ten foot stone wall was, as promised, covered in waxy deep green huge leaves. The surprise that it only bloomed at night made it seem that the place was under a magic spell! It was like something out of the Nathaniel Hawthorne short story, Rappicini's Daughter. As dusk fell to evening and night, the plant would slowly open giant 8 inch blooms. Under the moonlight, they looked like the Lunar Apollo Lander. Silvery, and delicate, with hints of gold. They smelled like heaven. When I picked them and placed them in a vase, they withered almost instantly, so this pleasure was only meant to be enjoyed in situ. I hope viewers will enjoy the naive style and sense of magical mystery here. I chose to paint on a piece of wood during one of my walks, and to work primarily with interference paint. This pigment has an iridescent quality that is extraordinary.
