Extraordinary Elephants is inspired by the mystery and many aspects of Elephant Intelligence, Culture and Thinking Processes that we are only beginning to understand. Elephants possess advanced, specialized cognitive traits—such as using names for individual peers and an extraordinary trunk-control neural network—that set them apart from almost all other non-human species. Naming Each Other: Research suggests that these contact calls have individually specific components, functioning like names. This ability to recognize individuals through calls has not been shown in other non-human species. Elephants generate distinct low-frequency rumbles that act as dedicated labels or names for specific family members. Their feet are so sensitive it is through them that hear and understand these names. An elephant's trunk is an incredibly versatile tool, highly tactile with infinite degrees of freedom of movement. Their massive cerebellum contains three times as many neurons as a human Elephants also have profound Grief and Death Awareness. Elephants exhibit remarkable social intelligence. They grieve for their deceased and engage in behaviors resembling burial rituals. They regularly visit the bones of dead relatives, gently touching the skulls and ivory with their trunks in quiet mourning, even years after the death occurred. Intentional Self-Medication: Elephants also have been observed self-medicating, such as chewing medicinal leaves to induce labor. Elephants can harbor love as well as deep seated resentment and anger towards those hurt their families.
