The painting Orange Theory is a meditation on things we don't understand but pretend we do! When I was living in Knoxville, and working at Scripps entertainment interactive, several of the women on my staff told me they were going to an exercise class at five in the morning. I was imlediately interested because I also work out at five in the morning. they told me the class was called Orangetheory. I thought to myself maybe this Orangetheory is something I could check out. I asked them what Orangetheory was and they explained it, but it did not make any sense to me. Then I remembered suddenly that I dislike organized classes and I prefer to work out alone. So I never experienced Orangetheory or figured out why it was called orange theory. I never researched it or spoke to them about it again and maybe that's for the best. One day I started thinking, what is Orangetheory? Most people would look it up on Google. However, I kind of resent this instant information world that we live in because sometimes it deprives us of our imagination and speculation. So I decided I was going to paint Orangetheory. I started doodling in orange and other colors with charcoal and paint pens and I quickly decided I didn't really wanna work on an actual canvas yet so instead I painted 4 smaller canvas boards. I worked on them separately and did not look at the other boards during the process because I wanted to surprise myself. I combined acrylics, thin gel medium, paint markerx and other standard tools I enjoy. But when I was almost finished with the individual canvases, I realized they were not big enough to cover the stretched canvas that I was gonna glue them to. I glued them to the canvas anyway, and there was a cross in the middle of the canvas, that was about 2 inches wide and I love crosses almost as much as I love triangles so there you go. After a while, I decided I could not let it stay like that. So I slathered thick craft glue inside the area between the canvasboards. The cross. And what else could I do but poor orange glitter on it? To be clear it's not actually orange according to the glitter bottle. It's actually some kind of copper color. But let's not stand on ceremony. This is my Orange Theory.
