I always seem to be more serene and oddly buoyed when the world descends into chaos. I read somewhere that chronically depressed people are cheered when the world mirrors their internal state. So I experienced a paradoxical sense of freedom during the lockdown in the first part of the Pandemic. Rather than despairing, I discovered my inner strength and resilience. I hope viewers will find pleasure in the piece aesthetically. What do you think the term Pass-Thru or Passing Through, or Just Passing Through really mean? For me, passing thru is the nature and essence of life itself. Nothing lives forever. So I noticed the opportunity offered by the pass of not becoming ill and living thru this time. Since I was working from home, like hundreds of millions of others, i discovered more free time. I started to volunteer from 6 am to 3 pm a couple times a week at the local Armory, where the National Guard had set up an early base for providing the first vaccines to the elderly. I loved this experience of volunteering and I know I hit much more back than I gave! So this sense of freedom and possibility, especially amidst challenge and hardship, is a kind of divine, yet evanescent gift. And yet... It is always there for us. The choice to get out of our comfort zone on behalf of others to make a difference. I chose to use a highly layered technique using matte gel washes of diluted color, interference paint and iridescent glitter. I enjoyed embedding silk, other fabric and metallic mesh carefully and seamlessly into the piece. Happiness and joy may be fleeting, but helping others is an experience that lasts. Are we really "Just Passing Thru?"
